Poonal (Upanayanam) is a traditional Hindu initiation ceremony that marks a young boy’s formal entry into spiritual and educational life.
It is mainly practiced in communities that follow Vedic traditions. During this ceremony, the boy is given a sacred thread called the “poonal” (also known as yajnopavita), which he wears over his shoulder.
